Over 20 years ago, Leandro Sigman and Marco Bressan began two separate journeys that eventually converged with the foundation of Cambium. Leandro’s family business had acquired Shell Forestry’s Argentinean and Paraguayan operations to create Pomera. Pomera grew to become a forestry leader in the region and, due to its expansion and operations, now owns unique data and IP related to genetics, tree growth, land, forestry, and the conservation of native species.
Around the time Pomera was being created, Marco was finishing a PhD in Artificial Intelligence. These studies were largely motivated by a surge in forest fires that devastated Patagonia and the need for intelligent remote sensing systems. Eventually, Marco contributed to the development of one of the first real-time imagery analytics platform in the space sector, built the first center of excellence in Data & Analytics in the financial sector in Europe and led the data transformation in two of the largest European banks.
Cambium now brings together decades of experience in forestry, technology, and finance to focus on the supply side of quality carbon offsets and with the ambition to make a significant impact in the planet’s carbon removal goals.
How to name a company with the mission to sequester CO2 and restore the balance of our atmosphere? How can we emphasize our commitment to nature-based solutions as the most effective way to achieve this goal?
Unlike animals, trees never stop growing. Their Cambium, the layer of non-specialized cells underneath the bark, allows trees to grow in volume by generating new tissues such as the xylem and the phloem. Cambium is therefore the main tissue responsible for carbon sequestration, as the specialized cells that derive from it consolidate the sugars that were created during photosynthesis, transforming them into lignin and cellulose, biopolymers which fix and store the carbon that trees capture from the CO2 in the atmosphere.
In addition to its botanical meaning, the Latin etymology of Cambium means change.
This is why embodies our nature-based solution for carbon sequestration and commitment to positive change, driven by innovation and respect for nature's role in building a sustainable future.
We began our journey in South America, where we have a deep understanding of the land, nature, trees, and society.
Additionally, Central and South America are home to a significant portion of the planet's afforestation and reforestation potential. Therefore, we believe that investments should be focused primarily where they can yield the fastest results against the climate emergency that we are facing.
However, while we started where we feel comfortable and see high potential for positive impact, our ambition is to contribute a substantial share of the worldwide carbon capture needed to keep global warming below 1.5°C. This can only be achieved if we think and operate on a global scale and prepare for the next stages of our expansion. Thus, the tools and knowledge we are developing are designed to be global, and our plans extend beyond South America and even beyond the forestry sector, encompassing a broader scope that reflects our commitment to global sustainability and environmental responsibility.
We love forests and the benefits they bring along.
We have experience developing quality reforestation/afforestation and conservation projects.
We have worked in different regions, with a variety of species, and different goals, such as conservation.
Mix of native species in Mesopotamia, Paraguay
The South American Mesopotamia is a rich eco-region located between the Uruguay and Paraná rivers, covering areas in Argentina, Uruguay, Brazil, and Paraguay. Some of its representative tree species of these rainforests are: Lapacho (Tabebuia spp.), Urunday (Astronium fraxinifolium), Palo Santo (Bulnesia sarmientoi), Quebracho Colorado (Schinopsis balansae) or Timbó (Enterolobium contortisiliquum)
Holm Oak forest in Extremadura, Spain
Holm oaks -Quercus ilex/Quercus rotundifolia- are the paradigmatic species of the Mediterranean forest, coexisting in perfect harmony with the rest of the flora of this climatic area. They cover the largest surface of forest in the Iberian Peninsula, with more than 3 million hectares (30.000 km2). Since ancient times, farmers, aware of the benefits of this type of tree, have maintained specimens of holm oak among their crops, forming the traditional landscape known as "dehesa", a multifunctional, agrosylvopastoral system and cultural landscape of southern and central Spain and southern Portugal.
Eucalyptus plantations in Misiones, Argentina
Eucalyptus grandis is a species of tall, fast-growing evergreen tree native to Australia that is widely cultivated around the world for its wood. Its fast growth speed and huge final size make it an attractive option for forestry and plantation purposes, as it is highly efficient in atmospheric CO2 removal, as it can reach heights of up to 50 meters in just 15 years; very few tree species can reach this pace of growth in that period of time.
Pino Ponderosa plantation in Patagonia, Argentina
Ponderosa pine (Pinus ponderosa), is a species of pine tree that is native to western North America, ranging from Canada to Mexico. It is a valuable species for carbon capture and storage due to its rapid growth, large size, and long lifespan (over 500 years). It has shown good adaptability in some areas of South America, especially on the slopes of the Andes on both sides, Chile and Argentina.

It is highly efficient in atmospheric CO2 removal, as it can reach heights of up to 50 meters in just 15 years; very few tree species achieve this pace of growth. However, this growth comes at a cost, such as a high water consumption or the shadowing of species with slow growth. This is why the sustainable design of eucalyptus forests should combine the right choice of geography with strong expertise.
